Peru, June/July 2010 Urubamba
Lori and I flew from Lima to Cuzco on Taca Airlines. From Cuzco airport, we drove to a very small, rural town in the Sacred Valley called Urubamba. The trip took over an hour on twisting roads, up and down mountains, passing first the overcrowded residential section of Cuzco, with people living literally on top of each other as shacks lined the sides of the mountains, to women in traditional clothing tending sheep and making mud bricks on farms in the countryside.
We stayed at the San Agustin Urubamba hotel; from there we set out to investigate the town. Well...not much to investigate, it turns out. Other than a group of American teens on a mission trip who also stayed at the the San Agustin, we seemed to be pretty much the only gringos around. Our first day, we were instructed to take it easy and adjust to the altitude (9,420 feet above sea level), so we wandered some of the streets of Urubamba, taking pictures and generally getting the lay of the land.
We found the town square, which was surprisingly beautiful and had a lovely church at one end. We sat on the benches there for a while and watched the world go by.
We had dinner at a restaurant where Lori, in her infinite wisdom, ordered large beers, for fea r that they would otherwise be small. They were indeed large. Good thing we didn't have anything else to do that night.. This was our first time attempting to order from a non-English speaker. We managed to get the beers and Lori's dinner, but somehow not mine. Oh well. Eventually, after some pointing and some pantomime, I got food too, and it was delicious.

Lori and I flew from our respective airports to Miami, and from there, we flew together to Lima. Actually, navigating the Miami airport was the most difficult leg of our nine-day journey. Upon landing in Lima, we were met at the airport by a wonderful guide from Condor Travel. She collected us and our bags, and drove us to Jose Antonio hotel in Moraflores, a district of Lima. After a rather strange, late-nite dinner of boiled potatoes in a bland yellow sauce, we headed off to bed. Our plane for Cuzco left early the next morning. Silly us, we turned down our waiter's offer of a Pisco Sour. At that point, we didn't know what we were saying (a little foreshadowing there).
